Plate Calculator (kg)
Load a barbell in kilograms: enter a target to get the discs for each side, or switch to "Plates → weight" and enter the discs to get the total. IPF disc sizes with a 20 kg bar; competition collars are optional.
Plates on each side 25 kg + 15 kg
100.0 kg (220.5 lb) = 20 kg bar + 2 × 40 kg of plates.
One side of the bar, heaviest plate innermost. Not to scale.
IPF disc sizes, colors and tolerances
The IPF Technical Rulebook (effective 1 March 2026, §2.3) allows the discs below in competition. Each must weigh within 0.25 percent or 10 grams of its face value.
| Disc | Allowed weight | Thickness, at most | Color |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 kg | 24.9375–25.0625 kg | 6 cm | Red |
| 20 kg | 19.95–20.05 kg | 6 cm | Blue |
| 15 kg | 14.9625–15.0375 kg | 3 cm | Yellow |
| 10 kg | 9.975–10.025 kg | 3 cm | Any color |
| 5 kg | 4.9875–5.0125 kg | 3 cm | Any color |
| 2.5 kg | 2.49–2.51 kg | 3 cm | Any color |
| 1.25 kg | 1.24–1.26 kg | 3 cm | Any color |
Discs go on heaviest first, innermost, with lighter discs following in descending order so the referees can read each one; the first, heaviest discs face in and the rest face out. The largest discs may be at most 45 cm across. For record attempts, lighter discs of 1, 0.5 and 0.25 kg are also allowed. The drawing under each result follows the same order and colors the 25, 20 and 15 kg discs.

Bar and collars in competition
Under IPF rules the bar and its two collars weigh 25 kg together, and collars of 2.5 kg each must always be used, so the lightest load on a competition bar is 25 kg. Pick "Competition, 2.5 kg each" to include them. The 15 kg bar option is the women's bar from the IWF weightlifting rules; the IPF rules give one bar weight for all lifters.
Kilograms and pounds
One pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg (NIST), so a 20 kg disc is 44.09 lb and a 45 lb plate is 20.41 kg. Every result also gives the total in pounds. For pound plates and a 45 lb bar, use the plate calculator in lb.
Questions
What is 4 plates in kg?
If "plates" means 45 lb plates on each side of a 45 lb bar, four per side make 405 lb, which is 183.70 kg. With 20 kg discs on a 20 kg bar, four per side make 180 kg; with 25 kg discs, 220 kg, or 225 kg with 2.5 kg competition collars.
What is 3 plates in kg?
Three 45 lb plates per side on a 45 lb bar make 315 lb, which is 142.88 kg. Three 20 kg discs per side on a 20 kg bar make 140 kg; three 25 kg discs make 170 kg, or 175 kg with competition collars.
How to calculate plate weight in kg?
Add the bar, the collars and both sides: total = bar + 2 × collar + 2 × the discs on one side. Example: a 20 kg bar with 2.5 kg collars and 25 + 10 + 2.5 kg on each side makes 20 + 5 + 2 × 37.5 = 100 kg. For pound plates, multiply by 0.45359237: a 45 lb plate is 20.41 kg.
